This cassette by paper artist Jennifer Collier is the center of a Venn Diagram of two of my interests: Cassette culture and paper art! By bonding, waxing, trapping and stitching Jennifer produce unusual paper ‘fabrics’, which are used to explore the ‘remaking’ of household objects. The papers are treated as if cloth, with the main technique employed being stitch; a contemporary twist on traditional textiles. Jennifer uses both hand and machine stitch in her work, and where possible tries to use traditional embroidery techniques. The papers are rarely ‘treated’ in any way, it is just the paper itself that she uses, but through years of practice she's mastered a feel for how far she can push it, and when it is going to tear, and which papers work best for what job.
