Sourcing Materials
Every book begins with the same basic materials: textiles and papers for decorative covers, and board for the structure of the book cover itself. Our textiles are sourced from designers and fashion houses. We take bolts of fabric and turn them into book cloth. The decorative papers for a few of our covers are either hand made or are printed designs. The board used for our covers is 100% recycled. We gather these items from several sources, trim them to size and hand them off to our 'gluers' or 'wrappers' to make the actual covers.
Making The Covers
Our 'gluers' adhere the decorative textiles and papers to the book board to make the many different size book covers. Gluers use traditional glue machines, table top units, which adhere a thin layer of adhesive to the textiles, which are then placed onto the covers. The textiles are followed by endsheets which finish off the decorative covers which are placed onto racks to dry before heading to the assembly stage.
Assembling The Books
Depending on the style of book, the various covers now spread out to the different binding stations in the studio. Albums are drilled and sewn by hand. Journals go through a few additional steps to make the pages, then the pages and covers are joined together and allowed to dry overnight. Side-sewn books such as our Twelve Ways series and Guestbooks are sewn by hand. The other bindings such as three-ring and wire-o are also bound by hand then sent off to be finished.
Finishing
Once the books have been bound, they go through inspection to make sure covers are straight, there are no stray bits of adhesive and that the pages are clean and securely bound. Once inspected each book is placed into a resealable clear bag, stickered with it's size and style and sent to our customers nationwide. |
